The Silver Fire burns on Thursday evening near Cabezon, California 08 August 2013. As of Thursday evening the fire had scorched 14,000 acres and was 20 percent contained. The view from Interstate 10 shows windmills generating power in the same wind spreading the fire.

The Colby Fire burns near Glendora, CA under a full moon next to the San Gabriel Highway. The Colbert Fire started in January, typically Southern California's rainy season and wildfire off-season. Days after the fire started California Governor Jerry Brown declared a drought emergency as the state slipped into it's driest period since 1877.

The Mountain Fire on Monday July 16 2013 near Mountain Center, CA in Riverside County. At least two structures were destroyed during the first night of the fire and erratic winds kept initial attack crews busy through the night.

The Rim Fire burns through Yosemite National Park and the Stanislaus National Forest in late August. Multiple heads of the fire over a vast distance created logistical challenges for fire crews already faced with steep terrain and bone dry timber.

A Type 5 brush engine with the Orange County Fire Authority is parked on an overnight shift watching the shifting winds of the Mountain Fire in Idylwild, CA. 6,000 residents from the town were evacuated as flames came within two miles of the mountain retreat. The OCFA engine was part of a strike team assigned to structure protection within the town.

The Mountain Fire burns on it's first night near Buck Meadow, CA in the mountains above Banning. The fire spread quickly and had burned and damaged at least one dozen homes and outbuildings overnight.
